Estonia has 3 excellent, country-crossing hiking trails that are perfectly suitable for mountain biking.
Peraküla-Aegviidu-Ähijärve (total length 820km)
Oandu-Aegviidu-Ikla (375km)
Penijõe-Aegviidu-Kauksi (613km)
The trails pass through the most beautiful natural and historical places. The hiking paths are designed so that every 15 kilometers on average, there is a resting place, suitable for a lunch break or overnight camping. Therefore, we encourage people to simply hop on a bike and take on a hiking trail section that suits their preferred length and location. Or why not traverse the entire trail. For this, we provide all the necessary equipment to manage in nature and achieve your goal.
For those who do not want to rely solely on equipment and their own hiking skills and wish for a more comfortable experience, we can also create a thoughtful route with accommodations and meals. Estonia is small enough that one can find several settlements during a day. In this case, the carried luggage is smaller, and it is possible to cover greater distances.
"Sample tour with comforts (2-3 days):
We start from Aegviidu, the hiking capital of Estonia, where many hiking trails intersect. It's easy to get to Aegviidu from Tallinn by train, and you can bring your bike along. There are many options for which path to take, but let's take, for example, the Peraküla-Aegviidu-Ähijärve hiking trail heading towards Peraküla. On this section, the trail runs through Kõrvemaa forests, where there are excellent bike paths. After cycling 30 km, you reach Alavere village, where there is a shop and a place to have lunch.
From here, the trail is quite diverse, passing through dense forest, along gravel and a bit of asphalt road, unless you want a more extreme option crossing ditches and bogs. After another 30 kilometers or so, you reach the Viking Village, where they offer a proper meal, sauna, and accommodation. The next day, the stronger ones can cover 60 km to Ohtu village, which is near Keila. If time or strength is short, you can easily finish the hike here and take the train back to Tallinn.
This is just one small example of a short trip that can be done with less equipment and more planning. However, the mission of Matkarat Tours is to offer as flexible a service as possible. We provide personal consultation and individual trip planning. We discuss the possibilities and expectations, and if desired, we offer transportation to the start of the hike and pick you up at the end of the trip. We also provide our support throughout the ride. If there are any questions about the route, equipment, or in case of an emergency - we are just a phone call away.
The uniqueness of our service is that the client can experience, either alone or with companions, the situation of an experienced bike tourer in the wild. The high-quality and well-thought-out equipment kit we offer includes everything necessary for overnight camping, cooking, trail navigation, and thus gives the opportunity to feel real freedom without the stress of planning
